ECS INDEX – Engineering Case Studies Index

Engineering Case Studies

Engineering Case Studies (ECS) present real construction investigations, engineering evaluations and practical solutions developed through DMSA consulting assignments. Each case study shares valuable engineering experience while maintaining complete client confidentiality.

Real engineering challenges provide the best opportunities for learning.

The SM Knowledge Hub Engineering Case Study Series presents practical site experiences, engineering investigations and corrective actions from actual construction projects. Every case study focuses on identifying the root cause, analysing the engineering aspects and documenting practical solutions that can be applied on future projects.

Where necessary, project names, client identities and confidential information are withheld to maintain professional confidentiality while preserving the engineering value of the study.

The objective of this series is to help engineers, consultants, contractors, RMC professionals and project teams learn from real field experiences and promote better engineering practices across the construction industry.

Published Engineering Case Studies

Engineering Case Study ECS 001 | Surface Cracking in RCC Columns

This case study investigates the occurrence of surface cracks observed in reinforced concrete columns of a high-rise residential project. The study examines site observations, material properties, construction practices and possible contributing factors before recommending practical corrective and preventive measures.

Engineering Case Study ECS 002 | Early-Age Cracking in RCC Slabs

This case study investigates early-age cracking observed in reinforced concrete slabs of a multi-storey building. The study examines crack patterns, probable causes and contributing construction factors before recommending practical repair and preventive measures.

Engineering Case Study ECS-003 | Bugs & Pinholes in RCC Columns and Walls

Engineering Investigation of Surface Bugs and Pinholes in RCC Columns and Walls

Engineering Case Study ECS-004 | Field-Cured Concrete Cubes vs Standard-Cured Concrete Cubes

Engineering Investigation of Field-Cured and Standard-Cured Concrete Cubes for Concrete Acceptance Testing

The ECS Library will continue to expand with investigations covering concrete quality, durability, precast construction, site troubleshooting, structural performance and construction best practices. New case studies will be published regularly through SMKH
