Engineering Case Study Background

This Engineering Case Study is based on an actual engineering investigation undertaken by DM Strategic Advisors (DMSA). Project and client details have been anonymised to maintain confidentiality.

The engineering investigation was undertaken after it was observed that concrete cubes were being cured on the construction site along with slabs and columns instead of being transferred to the standard curing tank.

The objective was to assess whether field-cured concrete cubes could be used for concrete acceptance testing, understand the difference between field curing and standard curing, and recommend the correct quality control practice for construction projects.

The assessment was based on site observations, review of cube curing practices and discussions with the project quality team.

Site Observations

  • Concrete cubes were kept on the slab near columns after de-shuttering.
  • Cubes were cured by sprinkling water along with structural concrete members.
  • The curing method followed the same practice adopted for slabs and columns.
  • The intention was to understand the strength development of concrete under actual site curing conditions.
  • Standard curing tanks were available, but field curing practices were also being followed for comparison.

The observed practice indicated the need to distinguish between acceptance testing of concrete and evaluation of site curing effectiveness.

Engineering Assessment

The engineering investigation concluded that standard-cured concrete cubes and field-cured concrete cubes serve different engineering purposes.

Standard-cured cubes are used for acceptance testing of concrete compressive strength and must follow the curing procedure specified in IS 516.

Field-cured cubes represent the curing conditions experienced by concrete at site and are useful only for assessing the effectiveness of site curing practices.

Why Field-Cured Concrete Cubes Cannot Replace Standard-Cured Concrete Cubes

Many construction sites assume that the strength of field-cured concrete cubes represents the actual structural strength of concrete. This interpretation is incorrect because acceptance testing and field performance assessment have different engineering objectives.

Standard-Cured Concrete Cubes

  • Used for acceptance of concrete compressive strength.
  • Must follow the standard curing procedure specified in IS 516.
  • Results are used for concrete quality acceptance and compliance.

Field-Cured Concrete Cubes

  • Represent actual site curing conditions.
  • Useful for monitoring the effectiveness of site curing.
  • Cannot be used for acceptance of concrete strength.
  • Should always be maintained separately from acceptance cubes.

Corrective Actions

  • Maintain a dedicated curing tank at site.
  • Separate acceptance cubes and field-cured cubes.
  • Label and maintain independent records.
  • Train QA/QC engineers on the difference between the two methods.

DMSA SOP

Acceptance Cubes

  • Demould after the specified period.
  • Immediately transfer to the curing tank.
  • Continue standard curing until the specified testing age.

Field-Cured Cubes (Optional)

  • Cast separate cubes.
  • Mark them as FIELD CURED.
  • Cure exactly as the structure is cured.
  • Record results separately.

Field-cured concrete cubes are valuable for evaluating the effectiveness of site curing practices, but they should never be used for concrete acceptance testing. Standard-cured concrete cubes remain the only accepted method for verifying compliance with specified concrete strength requirements under IS 516.

DMSA Recommendation

Use standard-cured cubes for concrete quality acceptance and field-cured cubes only as an additional tool to evaluate site curing practices and construction quality.

A Field-Cured Cube measures the effectiveness of site curing.

A Standard-Cured Cube establishes compliance with concrete strength requirements.

One cannot replace the other.
