Introduction
Concrete cracking prevention begins with proper planning, material control, optimized mix design, temperature management, good workmanship and effective curing.
Concrete cracks are among the most common concerns faced by contractors, consultants, developers and RMC producers. While some cracks are only aesthetic in nature, others may indicate issues related to materials, temperature, workmanship or curing.
The objective of this SOP is not to eliminate every crack, which is practically impossible, but to minimize their occurrence through good engineering practices.
Before Concreting
- Review member thickness, geometry and restraint conditions.
- Pay special attention to raft foundations, retaining walls, large slabs and mass concrete elements.
- Plan construction joints and pouring sequence properly.
- Ensure curing arrangements are available before concreting starts.
- Avoid peak afternoon concreting during extreme summer conditions wherever practical.
Materials and Storage
- Cover aggregate stockpiles using sheds, shade nets or tarpaulins.
- Prevent excessive heating of aggregates due to direct sunlight.
- Maintain consistent aggregate moisture conditions.
- Store cement and admixtures as per recommended practices.
Concrete Mix Design

Temperature Control

Finishing and Surface Protection
- Carry out finishing at the correct stage.
- Avoid premature finishing operations.
- Consider double finishing/muster for slabs exposed to rapid drying conditions.
- Protect freshly finished concrete from moisture loss.
- Cover exposed surfaces using tarpaulins, curing sheets, wet hessian or similar materials.
Curing
- Start curing as early as practical.
- Maintain continuous curing without interruption.
- Ensure adequate curing duration.
- Prevent alternate wetting and drying cycles.
- Remember that good curing remains one of the most effective methods of crack prevention.
Assessment of Cracks
- Do not rush into crack repair immediately after cracks appear.
- Monitor crack development during the early age of concrete.
- Prefer final assessment after 28 days, as crack patterns may continue to develop during hydration and shrinkage.
- Identify the root cause before selecting a repair method.
- Repairing symptoms without addressing root causes often results in recurrence.
